Here in Northern Chicago the nights are getting colder and soon the days will be chilly too. Is your chimney safe to use? We love to gather together with family and friends around the fireplace and enjoy the warmth coming from the crackling fire. In fact, a fireplace provides the perfect backdrop for entertaining. That’s why it’s so important to reduce the risk of chimney fires by having a chimney inspection and cleaning.
What about those chimneys that are venting a furnace, water heater or another type of appliance? It’s just as important to have these chimneys inspected because these appliances are venting potentially deadly and corrosive flue gasses.
Regardless of what the chimney is venting it is very important to make sure it’s in good working order. The weather is such that repairs can still be made before cold weather sets in. Additional protective products such as a chimney cap, chimney top damper or chimney liner can still be installed.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that all chimneys be inspected on an annual basis and cleaned if necessary. Chimney safety is an important maintenance issue to have its own safety week and is followed next week by National Fire Prevention Week.
