WHEN INSECTS INFEST: HOW TO KEEP YOUR CHIMNEY BUG-FREE

Insect infestations are no joke. Creeping crawlers can be a huge annoyance when found in the living space and the spring and summer months seem to only draw more of them into the home. How do they get inside? Ants, bees, even stink bugs can invade your home through any opening on the home’s exterior including the chimney. Their infestations can be more than just a minor nuisance, too. Larger insect problems can make the chimney more prone to fire, cause damage within the home, and create unsanitary living conditions. The best defense against an infestation is to quickly eliminate them when they occur while taking steps to prevent them in the future.

Preventing an Infestation

– Patch any cracks around the chimney’s crown and exterior.

– Install a chimney cap on top. Chimney caps are a great way to prevent insects and animals from entering the area.

– If a chimney cap is not preferable, use wire mesh to at least prevent larger insects and pesky critters from easy access.

– Keep moisture out of the area and ensure there is no pooling on the roof near the chimney opening.

Eliminating an Existing Infestation

– To first determine if there are insects within the flue, shine a flashlight up the space to illuminate the area and scan the walls for signs of infestation. Live bugs, eggs, and nests may be noticeable from below.

– Hire an exterminator to remove the insects from the chimney. These professionals have the right tools and equipment to handle any space including the chimney flue.

– Once the insects have been removed, hire a certified chimney sweep to complete a thorough cleaning and inspection of the chimney. They will look for signs of damage while removing any nests or debris left by the bugs.
