Here are some of the problems that leaky, clogged or damaged gutters can cause or contribute to existing problems:
Cracks in the basement/foundationA damaged foundation can be a costly home improvement project. Clogged gutters can add to the problem by helping water to pool around the foundation, which can lead to weakening of materials and create potential entry points.
Wood fascia can start to rot when water builds up and stands stagnant for hours to several days due to clogged gutters. It starts to break down and decompose, causing serious problems. Replacing the wood fascia can cost thousands of dollars.
Leaking roofs and windows
If the paint or drywall in your ceiling starts to bubble or sag then there’s a problem. Clogged gutters can cause rain to back up and leak into a home. Water that’s frozen in the gutter can clog the gutters blocking the flow during thaws causing damage to the fascia, shingles and wood on the roof. This can cause leaks into your attic and home.
Icy frozen sidewalks/landscaping
A clogged gutter can cause thawing ice to melt and drop onto high-traffic areas, such as sidewalks. This moisture can freeze resulting in a major safety hazard for anyone who uses the sidewalk. It can also damage concrete and landscaping.
A clogged gutter that drains next to a driveway can wash away the soil under the driveway and add freeze/thaw damage to the concrete. This could lead to sagging, cracking or other types of damage.
Insects love moisture and humidity. If your fascia is consistently wet due to clogged or damaged gutters, or there is moisture around the wood siding, insects may gravitate to this area. Carpenter ants and Termites are especially drawn to wet wood. Once this infestation starts it’s hard to get rid of these pests.
