Spring is in the air and the weather is wonderful here at Lindemann Chimney Service along the northern shore of Chicago and southern Wisconsin! Along with the return of the birds there comes another problem. Soon all kinds of animals will be looking for nesting spots. One of the most popular places is a chimney.

There are many types of animals that build nests in chimneys. One of the most common is the chimney swift. This protected species should not be disturbed and you will have to wait until they leave the nest. While this may seem cute at first they can be annoying after a while. If one gets loose in the house there will likely be soot smudges ever place it comes in contact with the wall.

Raccoons are another animal that love to nest in chimneys. Since they are nocturnal they will be active mainly at night. This could mean scratching and loud noises just when you are trying to get some rest. Other animals that have been found in chimneys are squirrels, seagulls, owls and snakes.

A chimney cap will prevent animal intrusion while also protecting your chimney from moisture, leaves and other debris. If you have a fireplace you might want to consider a chimney top mounted fireplace damper which helps to seal in heated and air-conditioned air when the fireplace isn’t in use.
