Watch Out for Home Improvement Scams!

Lindemann Chimney Service has been in the chimney, gutter cleaning and home service business for decades. As a reputable family owned company, we consider ourselves a strong part of the community. We have heard of some home improvement scams happening in the Northern Chicago area and just wanted to forewarn you of what to look out for.

    Mike Ruehrdanz Lindemann Service

Home improvement scam operations often solicit their victims by calling and offering a deal that’s too good to be true. Or, they may call posing as a prominent service company in your area. Sometimes they may show up at your home and claim to finish a job started previously, or tell you the fire marshal sent them. Sometimes they even start “work” on your home without your permission.

Here are some of the key things to look for: No markings on their vehicles; No company uniforms; Unkempt appearance (our employees are family men) and/or Hand written bills with no identifying information. They will be pushy, demanding immediate payment. They may ask that the check be made out to a personal name verses a business name. They may offer cash discounts. You may be asked to write a check from a bank account that is closer to them. They may threaten you saying the fire department sent them. Some companies have even stolen jewelry and other valuables when given access to the home.

No community is immune to home improvement scams. Many very intelligent people have been scammed. Although these companies often prey on the elderly, younger people have been taken to the cleaners. If you think you have been scammed, first contact the police. Then give us a call. We would be happy to take a look at the work that was done. Often, scammers can make a normal operating chimney, etc., unsafe.

If you have elderly parents, talk to them about these scams and ask them to let you know if someone shows up at their home to do some work or tries to pressure them into having work done. Legitimate business will be happy to talk to you and anyone else about the work that needs to be done and will show you what needs repair, answering any questions you might have.

If you need work done in your home we would be happy to take a look. Our sweeps are certified through the Chimney Safety Institute of America. If it’s out of our area of expertise we will refer you to a trust-worthy company with a long history in the business. You can reach us at 847-739-4199 or click here to contact us.
